LUIS BUÑUEL EN MEXICO
November 22 to December 20, 2010

AUSTIN, TX (November 15, 2010) - As part of the celebrations of the Bicentennial of Mexico's fight for independence and the Centennial of the Revolution, Cine Las Americas presents the film series LUIS BUÑUEL EN MEXICO which includes five films directed by the critically acclaimed Spanish director during the 1950’s in Mexico.

LUIS BUÑUEL EN MEXICO is presented every Monday at 8pm, from November 22 to December 20, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). This is the third series of an on-going, year-round program that Cine Las Americas will host during 2010 to honor Mexico's independence and revolution anniversaries.

SUBIDA AL CIELO (MEXICAN BUS RIDE)
Luis Buñuel

In a small coast town, young Oliverio is forced to interrupt his honeymoon because his mother, Doña Ester, is dying. She asks Oliverio to go to Petatlan to look for Mr. Figueroa, so that he can write her will. Oliverio begins his trip in a beaten up bus, driven by Silvestre. During the trip, the young man has to overcome all sorts of unforeseen events and Raquel’s insinuations, a sensual and flirty woman set on having sex with him.

En un poblado costeño, el joven Oliverio debe interrumpir su viaje de bodas porque su madre, doña Ester, está moribunda. La madre pide a Oliverio que vaya a Petatlán a buscar al licenciado Figueroa, para que redacte su testamento. Oliverio emprende el viaje en un destartalado autobús, conducido por el chofer Silvestre. En el trayecto, el joven tendrá que sortear toda suerte de imprevistos y el asedio de Raquel, una sensual y coqueta mujer empeñada en hacer el amor con Oliverio.

When he discovers his wife’s infidelity, Quintin kicks her out of the house. While she’s leaving, she screams at him that their daughter is the result of her adultery and she is not really his. Embittered, Quintin abandons the girl with Lencho and his wife Toña. Many years later Maria convinces Quintin hat she lied about his paternity and tells him he must go back to look for his daughter.

Al descubrir el adulterio de su esposa María, Quintín la corre de su casa. Al irse, la mujer le grita que su hija Marta es fruto del adulterio. Amargado, Quintín abandona a la niña con Lencho y su esposa Toña. Años después, María convence a Quintín de que ella mintió sobre su paternidad y que debe regresar a buscar a su hija.

The rich and drunken widower Ramiro allows his children Virginia and Eduardo, his good for nothing brother Ladislao and his sister in law Milagros, to exploit him. Desperate, his brother Greogorio decides to make them all believe that Ramiro is ruined and that the family has to work to survive. But, who will have the last laugh? And who will learn at last the lessons of life?

El viudo, rico y borrachín Ramiro se deja explotar por sus hijos Virginia y Eduardo, su vago hermano Ladislao y su cuñada Milagros. Desesperado, su hermano Gregorio decide hacerle creer que ha quedado arruinado y que su familia debe trabajar para sobrevivir. ¿Pero quién reirá al final? ¿y quién aprenderá al fin las lecciones de la vida?

LA ILUSIÓN VIAJA EN TRANVÍA (ILLUSION TRAVELS BY STREETCAR)

Cast: Lilia Prado, Fernando Soto Mantequilla, Carlos Navarro, Agustín Isunza

When they find out that the 133 tram, where they have worked all their lives, is being retired from service, Caireles and Tarrajs get drunk and decide to steal it. During the night they give service to an eclectic group of people that include a catrin, a couple of nuns, a teacher with his students and a couple of slaughterhouse workers. The next morning, Caireles and Tarrajas try to take the tram back but they are faced with the obstinacy of Papá Pinillos, a retired inspector that is set on turning them in to the authorities.

Al enterarse que el tranvía 133, en el cual han trabajado toda su vida, será retirado de servicio, Caireles y Tarrajas se emborrachan y deciden robarlo. Durante la noche dan servicio a un grupo ecléctico de pasajeros que incluye a un catrín, un par de beatas, un profesor con sus alumnos y unos matanceros del rastro. A la mañana siguiente, Caireles y Tarrajas tratan de devolver el tranvía pero se enfrentan a la obstinación de Papá Pinillos, un inspector jubilado que pretende delatarlos.

NAZARÍN
Luis Buñuel

In early XX century Mexico, the humble priest Nazarín shares his misery with the needy that live near the Chanfa hostel. After protecting a prostitute responsible for starting a fire that destroys the hostel, Nazarín is forced to flee the town. While he is travelling, the priest’s actions cause a series of conflicts that go against his vision of Christian charity.

En el México de principios del siglo veinte, el humilde cura Nazarín comparte su pobreza con los necesitados que habitan alrededor del mesón de Chanfa. Después de proteger a una prostituta que provoca el incendio del mesón, Nazarín se ve obligado a abandonar el lugar. En su camino, las acciones del religioso provocan una serie de conflictos que se oponen a su visión de la caridad cristiana.
