Sergio García Locatelli

Spain/Peru, Documentary, 2009 19 min, DVCAM, Color Spanish with English subtitles

Seen through the eyes of an exile, the large, Latin American city of Lima, Peru provides a sense of nostalgia and yearning for director Sergio García Locatelli. Filming the city during a grey, misty winter, the historic heart of the city, in all its reconstruction and restructuring, shows the coexistence of two worlds: that of an aristocratic past and of the current inhabitants who emigrated in search of the "Lima dream." The film takes audiences on a panoramic tour of Lima and its outskirts - a place where poverty exists visibly within the margins of wealth.

Historia de un día begins by observing the peaceful life of farmers living in a rural area in Latin America. Day breaks. A woman touches her eyebrows. A man shaves. Chickens are set loose and goats are fed. Little or nothing is said but the soundtrack gradually evolves into a rich, subtle combination of background noise and added sounds. Morrer Como um Homem To Die Like a Man

João Pedro Rodrigues

Portugal/France, Drama, 2009 134 min, 35mm, Color Portuguese with English subtitles

Co-sponsored by the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival

Tonia is a transsexual star in the Lisbon club world. She is juggling a needy, junkie boyfriend; competition from a new black, drag sensation; her psychopathic, soldier son; and, worst of all, the physical and emotional ravages of age. Her body is rejecting the various surgical and hormonal transformations that made her famous, a fact made evident by the brutal representations of its physical deterioration. Her body seems to insist that her life lived as a woman must end in her dying like a man, but nothing is as simple as it seems. The film blends surrealism with realism to paint a complex psychological portrait. Official selection by the Cinefondation for the Atelier of Cannes Film Festival 2007 and for Un Certain Regard during Cannes 2009.
