The Night of the Moon Has Many Hours

Mauricio Arango

Colombia/USA, Surrealist Human Rights Drama, 201016 min, HDCAM, ColorNo dialogue

A young man living in the Colombian countryside wakes up in the middle of the night. With some difficulty he gets up, dresses, and ventures outside. As he walks, nature's presence is felt in a heightened way: animal noises, trees swaying in the wind, and an impenetrable darkness overtake his path. After reaching the river's shore, he wades into the water on a raft with nothing but a long stick to row with and a single light to guide him. Beneath the moon-lit ripples he makes a startling discovery. In the eerie stillness of the night, it is hard to distinguish him from what he finds. He navigates upstream, alone and consumed by the weight of his chore. This short film has been enjoying an international festival tour along with accolades including a Jury's Choice Award at the Black Maria Film + Video Festival.

El Cantante

León Ichaso

USA, Biographical Drama, 2006 106 min, 35mm, Color Spanish, English

Spanning the 1960s to the 1980s, EL CANTANTE charts Hector Lavoe's rapid rise to success and fame as an artist whose music combined Puerto Rican tradition with streetwise modernity, unabashed emotion with straightforward realism. It reveals the singer not only as an architect of salsa but as its soul; the kind of artist, like Billie Holliday, Edith Piaf or La Lupe, who forges an uncanny emotional bond with his audience. Love, pain, joy, pride, sorrow, endurance: Hector Lavoe's singing contained the raw stuff of life as ordinary people - and he himself - knew it.

Leon Ichaso was born in Havana, Cuba. He left the island for exile in the United States with his mother and sister at age 14; his father joined them 5 years later having stayed behind to support the Cuban Revolution. Ichaso is known as "an actor's director," as a writer and director who does not compromise as he tells his tales, and as a filmmaker who specializes in gritty urban realism.

Morrer Como um Homem To Die Like a Man

João Pedro Rodrigues

Portugal/France, Drama, 2009 134 min, 35mm, Color Portuguese with English subtitles

Co-sponsored by the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival

Tonia is a transsexual star in the Lisbon club world. She is juggling a needy, junkie boyfriend; competition from a new black, drag sensation; her psychopathic, soldier son; and, worst of all, the physical and emotional ravages of age. Her body is rejecting the various surgical and hormonal transformations that made her famous, a fact made evident by the brutal representations of its physical deterioration. Her body seems to insist that her life lived as a woman must end in her dying like a man, but nothing is as simple as it seems. The film blends surrealism with realism to paint a complex psychological portrait. Official selection by the Cinefondation for the Atelier of Cannes Film Festival 2007 and for Un Certain Regard during Cannes 2009.

The near future. The world is divided by closed borders but connected by a digital network that ties together people around the world. Memo Cruz lives in an isolated farming community in Mexico, the kind of place that seems frozen in time—except for the hi-tech, militarized dam that was built by a corporation, and now controls the town’s water supply. Memo dreams of leaving his small pueblo and finding work in the hi-tech factories in the big cities in the north. On his journey north, he meets Luz, an aspiring journalist who dreams of writing a story that might one day change the world.
