  La onda chicana

Efraín Gutiérrez

USA, Documentary, 197617 min, 16mm, ColorSpanglish

Director Efraín Gutiérrez in attendance

Documenting La Revolucion Chicana, the film records a portion of an open-air concert in Port Lavaca, Texas, on July 4, 1976. The concert, which showcased Spanish-language rock and popular Tejano music, featured Little Joe y la Familia, Chacha Jimenez y Los Chachos, Snowball & Company, La Fabrica, Esteban Jordan, and other pioneers of Tex-Mex sound. Gutiérrez was one of the first to coin the term “Tejano” and define this music, but decided to make a statement through his insistent use of the word “Chicano.” This action linked the concert and music to the Chicano civil rights movement, which limited the film's distribution at the time of its release.

Joaquin is a driving instructor who has been living and working in East Los Angeles for years. On the side, he also teaches illegal immigrants how to drive. Yet, one day, after a driving lesson with Nayeli, a new student whose dreams particularly catch Joaquin's attention, Vazquez, a HSI agent who has been on his trail for some time, shows up at Joaquin's door. He must help Vazquez arrest Lalo during their next drop-off, or else he will be locked away for good. Joaquin must decide whether to save himself or give up the immigrants he has been helping, including Nayeli, whom he cares about more than he thought he would. This AFI thesis film has screened in Latino festivals around the country, including the San Diego and Chicago Latino Film Festivals.
