Gordo, calvo y bajitoFat, Bald, Short Man

Carlos Osuna

Colombia, Black Comedy/Drama/Animation, 201190 min, HD, ColorSpanish with English subtitles

Antonio Farfán is a middle-aged man who works in a notary's office. He has always believed he is a failure because he is bald, short and fat. Though his mind is never silent, his life goes along almost uneventfully until the new notary arrives: a fatter, balder and shorter man who, unlike Antonio, is successful and loved by others. Dazed and confused, Antonio is now thrown out to the real world where he faces his own fears and ends up living pretty unexpected situations. With an animation style all its own, playing smartly with depth of field, Gordo, calvo y bajito is an impressive cinematic debut, screening internationally and recently receiving a Special Mention at the Warsaw Film Festival.

Morrer Como um Homem To Die Like a Man

João Pedro Rodrigues

Portugal/France, Drama, 2009 134 min, 35mm, Color Portuguese with English subtitles

Co-sponsored by the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival

Tonia is a transsexual star in the Lisbon club world. She is juggling a needy, junkie boyfriend; competition from a new black, drag sensation; her psychopathic, soldier son; and, worst of all, the physical and emotional ravages of age. Her body is rejecting the various surgical and hormonal transformations that made her famous, a fact made evident by the brutal representations of its physical deterioration. Her body seems to insist that her life lived as a woman must end in her dying like a man, but nothing is as simple as it seems. The film blends surrealism with realism to paint a complex psychological portrait. Official selection by the Cinefondation for the Atelier of Cannes Film Festival 2007 and for Un Certain Regard during Cannes 2009.
