Vanilla: The Sacred Orchid
Curtis Craven Mexico/USA, Docmentary, 2010 27 min, BetaSP, Color Spanish with English subtitles
Vanilla is a New World spice originating from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Two different groups of people are involved in its production: the indigenous people who have been growing it on small farms for centuries, and descendants of Italian immigrants who have been processing and selling the bean since the mid-1800s. Vanilla: The Sacred Orchid examines the relationship these two cultures have with the plant during its yearly cycle, from the hand-pollination of the flowers, to the harvesting and subsequent drying of the bean.
