Morrer Como um Homem
To Die Like a Man
João Pedro Rodrigues
Portugal/France, Drama, 2009
134 min, 35mm, Color
Portuguese with English subtitles
Co-sponsored by the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival
Tonia is a transsexual star in the Lisbon club world. She is juggling a needy, junkie boyfriend; competition from a new black, drag sensation; her psychopathic, soldier son; and, worst of all, the physical and emotional ravages of age. Her body is rejecting the various surgical and hormonal transformations that made her famous, a fact made evident by the brutal representations of its physical deterioration. Her body seems to insist that her life lived as a woman must end in her dying like a man, but nothing is as simple as it seems. The film blends surrealism with realism to paint a complex psychological portrait. Official selection by the Cinefondation for the Atelier of Cannes Film Festival 2007 and for Un Certain Regard during Cannes 2009.
