Cine Las Americas’ main activities are divided in two: the exhibition and promotion of Latin and indigenous film and video, and the creation and administration of bilingual media arts education programs for minority youth in Austin.

exhibition and promotion of latin american and indigenous film and video

The Exhibition and promotion of Latin American film and video is mainly programmed through the organization’s headline event, the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival, a nine day long annual event that traditionally takes place during the month of April, screening new work made by or about Latin American and indigenous people. The festival screens narrative and documentary feature and short films, as well as experimental, animation and youth films in competitive and non-competitive sections. This event is complemented with repertoire and special screenings, currently bringing an average of 100 films and 35 filmmakers from Texas, the United States, Latin America and the rest of the world to 3,500 attendees in Austin. The 11 Cine Las Americas International Film Festival is scheduled for April 16 to 24.

The Film Exhibition program also includes year-round screenings, presenting advance premieres, exclusive theatrical releases, series, retrospectives, and joint programming with other film and cultural events in Texas.

media arts education

Emergencia is an International Youth Film Competition that takes place within the frame of the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. This program is produced by a group of high school students who preview film and video entries received from all around the nation and other countries in response to a call for entries. The students decide what films to program during the festival and issue awards for the best work. They also participate in producing a day of free screenings open to the public during the film festival. Emergencia is complemented with free workshops for children and youth.

The Film Exhibition program also includes year-round screenings, presenting advance premieres, exclusive theatrical releases, series, retrospectives, and joint programming with other film and cultural events in Texas.

BeatLab is a digital music creation program for youth, currently serving nine schools within the Austin Independent School District (AISD). BeatLab uses digital technology to create and compose studio music. BeatLab instructors are professional musicians who also bring guest producers and artists to schools in Austin. The schools served by this program have a growing Latino population. This program has been available since 2003, bringing a creative opportunity to different schools, serving at-risk students and talented youth who can explore the potentials of their artistic talent and curiosity through technology and music.
