Buffalo Calling

Tasha Hubbard

Canada, History/Experimental Animation, 2013
12 min, HD, Color
No dialogue

Buffalo Calling follows the journey of four buffalo calves, orphaned by the horrific buffalo slaughter in the northern plains grasslands. The buffalo calves and their descendants are brought over the Rocky Mountains in the 1870s to a temporary refuge in the plateau region of the Rockies, assisted by the Salish and Kootenai tribe. After the Dawes Act of 1905, they lose their refugee status and are herded into early 20th century railway cars, to be shipped to the northern parklands of Alberta. But the land in which the calves were born and the spirit of the buffalo continue to call for their return. And after 100 years, the buffalo finally come back to the land of their ancestors. BUFFALO CALLING screened as part of imagineNATIVE in 2013.

Derby & Groma

Kara Blake

Canada, Biographical Documentary/Artist, 2013
17 min, Super 16mm, Color/Black & White
Spanish with English subtitles

While taking a stroll in Buenos Aires, photo collector Pablo Cruz Aguirre came across an unusual gift.  Blowing down the street was a collection of letters, postcards and photos depicting a performing duo named Derby and Groma. Desolina Merlino, alias Derby, was born 1891 of Italian descent. Samuel Salomón Gromatzky, alias Groma, was the son of Jewish immigrants in Argentina, born in 1895.  The two performed acrobatic dance routines in theaters throughout Europe and Latin America in the late 1920’s.  With the assistance of historians and collectors, the film paints a picture of Argentina’s cultural life in the early 20th century, a world from which few traces still exist. After premiering at Hot Docs in 2013, the film has continued to gain recognition at festivals like DOC NYC and the International Festival of Films on Art.

Montaje anónimo

Behind the Stage

Marcelo Del Campo

Chile, Art Documentary, 2013
13 min, HDSLR, Color/Black & White
No dialogue

The world behind the stage of the Santiago Municipal Theatre is unknown. To understand it, it is necessary to visit and discover it structurally, functionally, humanly and emotionally. Anonymity is the characteristic that best describes the stage machinery and those that operate it, which has left this trade devoid of recognition, despite constructing a fascinating world, worthy of tribute. MONTAJE ANONIMO received an honorable mention in SANFIC and FICVALDIVIA in 2013 and has just begun to screen on the international festival circuit.

Nadie especial

Nobody Special

Juan Alejandro Ramírez

Peru, Human Rights/Social Issue Documentary, 2013
23 min, 16mm, Color
Quechua with English subtitles

A woman fights a losing battle: one can't be poor and still want to stay among the familiar, the everyday, where one was born and raised. She can only observe, with a mix of confusion and rage, how her community is becoming deserted and sad – its children displaced to far off, ugly places. NADIE ESPECIAL is about any place where the cards seem to be forever stacked against the powerless. But with great lyricism, it also shows the resolve of some individuals to challenge their fate and restore their dignity, even if that decision furthers their isolation as they are pushed toward a last frontier. The short film was the Grand Jury Winner at the 28th Mar del Plata International Film Festival and has screened at prestigious festivals world wide.
