The beautiful Huastecan sound ("son huasteco") has echoed from the mountains of northeast Mexico for more than a century. On Sundays, people meet in town squares to dance and stomp to the explosive violin solos and driving guitar rhythms that make this music so unique. "Son huasteco" continues to flourish here despite two decades of globalization and mass migration to the United States.

Saya: Dance and Survival in an Afro-Bolivian Village

Bolivia, Music/Human Rights Documentary, 2012
21 min, HDV, Color/Black & White

This documentary reveals how the elders and ancestors of the people of a small Bolivian community worked under a form of slavery that persisted until the 1950s. Community members still perform dances rooted in their African cultural heritage. The dance troupe performs in the plaza of a nearby tourist town before an audience of local indigenous people, rich weekenders from the Bolivian capital, and international tourists. The film highlights the dilemmas of cultural survival and emergence for an endangered subculture in an era of globalization.

Sergio Oksman

After appearing in the film ROSEMARY'S BABY, by Roman Polanski, Elmer Modlin ran away with his wife Margaret and his son Nelson to a distant land. They shut themselves inside a dark apartment, where Margaret devoted herself to painting the coming Apocalypse, using Nelson and Elmer as models. Thirty years later, hundreds of the family's intimate photographs and documents appeared on the sidewalk like a jigsaw puzzle, waiting for someone to come along and piece together A STORY FOR THE MODLINS.
